Guardian ad Litem

A guardian ad litem (GAL) is an attorney appointed by the court to provide assistance in cases involving child custody and other child-related issues. The primary role of the GAL is to make sure the best interests of the child are protected and the child is safe.

It is common for courts to appoint a GAL in cases where a child might be in danger, such as in cases of alleged abuse or neglect, if divorcing spouses are widely divergent in their respective negotiating positions regarding child custody and in similar situations. The GAL interviews the parties, conducts research and reports his or her findings back to the court to take under advisement.

A lawyer who serves as a guardian ad litem has unique insights into the inner workings of the divorce courts and the methods by which a range of divorce and custody matters are resolved. It is a high honor and trust from the court to be appointed as a guardian ad litem.

As a divorce and custody lawyer, I have obtained all of the training and necessary licensure to serve as a guardian ad litem. This is a tremendous asset in divorce/dissolution cases involving child custody, visitation, child support and other related issues.
